Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains warmly welcomed Bishop Vincent Long Van Nguyen OFM Conv as the fourth Bishop of Parramatta on the evening of Thursday 16 June 2016 in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta.

The Catholic Mass, attended by thousands, was concelebrated by His Grace Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP, Archbishop of Sydney, the Pope’s representative to Australia, His Excellency Most Rev Adolfo Tito Yllana, Apostolic Nuncio to Australia, Archbishops and Bishops of Australia, clergy of the Diocese of Parramatta and visiting clergy.

During his homily, Bishop Vincent said he was humbled by his appointment. ‘I am very honoured and humbled by this appointment and grateful for the opportunity to serve the Church in Parramatta during this time,’ Bishop Vincent said. ‘As your Bishop, I am committed to be a bridge builder.’

‘The Scriptures we have heard tonight speak of a radical vision of love, inclusion and human flourishing,’ he said. ‘We should ask ourselves what it means to apply this expansive vision of God to our social matrix and what it means to be a house for all peoples.’

Bishop Vincent said he wanted to be a bridge builder to all communities and reached out to abuse victims, divorcees and the LGBTIQ community in particular.

‘There can be no future for the living church without there being space for those who have been hurt, damaged or alienated, be they abuse victims, survivors, divorcees, gays, lesbians or disaffected members,’ Bishop Vincent said.

Echoing Pope Francis, Bishop Vincent continued, ‘we are urged to be a church where everyone can feel welcomed, loved, forgiven and encouraged to live according to the Gospel… I am committed to make the church in Parramatta the house for all peoples, a church where there is less an experience of exclusion but more an encounter of radical love, inclusiveness and solidarity.’

🪴Kitchen Gardens Expo🪴 What a fantastic day for our group of Year 5 students who represented Chisholm at the School Kitchen Gardens Expo at Metella Road Public School. They did an amazing job speaking about our School Gardens initiative as well as listening to how other schools included their Kitchen Gardens program into their learning. Students enjoyed seeing the beautiful gardens and cooking up a storm in the kitchen competition using fresh produce. It was a day of growth, both for our students and for our Garden and Inquiry programs!

Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese mourns the loss of former Executive Director of Schools Greg Whitby AM KSG. Diocese of Parramatta Bishop Vincent Long has shared a moving tribute to Greg here: https://catholicoutlook.org/vale-to-greg-whitby-am-former-executive-director-of-catholic-education/ Greg led our organisation, then known as Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta, from 2006 to 2022. He will be remembered fondly, including for his dedication to making a difference to the lives of children and young people across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains through education. Not only was Greg our leader, he was also one of our own: a graduate of St Monica's North Parramatta as well as a former Principal of Emmaus Catholic College Kemps Creek. A larger-than-life character, his championship of change and innovation was a source of inspiration. He leaves an extraordinary legacy of thought-leadership and advocacy that continues to serve Catholic schools in the Parramatta Diocese today. CSPD gives thanks for Greg’s life and leadership. He will be remembered for his courage, vision and passion, which will live on through the generations of educators he has inspired. We share our sincerest sympathies with Greg’s wife Sue, their children Matthew, Alexandra and Sophie, his grandchildren, and extended family at this very sad time. Eternal rest grant unto Greg, O Lord. May perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

🩹 First Aid for Kids – Real Skills, Real Confidence! 🚑 Today, our students took part in the First Aid for Kids program delivered by St John Ambulance — and what a valuable experience it was! The hands on and engaging experience was specifically designed to teach students essential and potentially lifesaving first aid skills. Throughout the sessions, students learned to: ✅ Recognise an emergency situation ✅ Call Triple Zero (000) for help ✅ Provide basic care for common injuries. We are so fortunate to have been a part of this initiative, which brings important learning to life in a way that is fun, practical and meaningful. Most importantly, it gave our students the skills and confidence to act in an emergency if needed. This initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to student wellbeing and empowers our children with real skills that could potentially one day save a life. 👏 ⛑️
